Jacques Malan Game Farm Management and Breeding of Rare Game Species

mid-congress tour

Jacques Malan is one of the top breeders of rare game species in the country.  His farm, Lumarie, consists of 7 000 ha and is situated 50 km west of Bela-Bela in the Central Sandy Bushveld. On Lumarie a wide selection of rare species, including the beautiful natural colour variations, are bred.  Buffalo, Sable- & Roan antelope, golden wildebeest, saddled impalas and chocolate springbuck are just some to mention. As a former president of Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA), Jacques will share his knowledge and experience on the management and breeding of these high value game species to the GSSA delegates.  This is for sure a tour not to be missed.

Mabula Lodge Bush Control

Mabula Lodge is a well-known nature reserve in Mabula
Limpopo. It accommodates the big five and various other wildlife species, including cheetah.  The reserve is 8500 ha in size and is situated approximately 60km east of Bela Bela on the Bela Bela/Rooiberg/Tabazimbi road in the Sour Bushveld. Their activities cover a wide range, including ecotourism, timeshare, conservation and research. During this tour, Jock McMillan, their Ecological Manager, will share his knowledge and first-hand experience of their veld management practises, which include bush control, fire and the control of Seriphium plumosum, with delegates. This will probably be the highlight of the days’ tours.

Wayne Knight's Holistic Management

The Knight Family has farmed on the farm  Witpoort Wayne Knight
since 1939.  The farm is 4360 ha in size and is situated approximately 6km from the Nyl Toll Plaza on the N11(RoedtanMokopane Road) in the Sourish Mixed/Mixed Bushveld. Since 1998, holistic veld management was practised, the main aim being management for basal cover and improving soil organic matter. At the 1999 GSSA Congress in Bela Bela, Waynes’ father, Tom, received a special commendation as runner up for the Peter Edwards award. At the current congress, Wayne will share their viewpoints, knowledge and experience of their veld management practises with delegates.
