SA Genetics Society (SAGS) & SA Society for Bioinformatics (SASBi) Joint Congress 2014

We are delighted to announce the 2nd Joint Congress of the South African Society for Bioinformatics (SASBi) and the South African Genetics Society (SAGS), to be held from 23 to 26 September 2014. After a successful 2012 Congress at Stellenbosch University, the Joint SASBi-SAGS Congress will be hosted in 2014 by the University of Pretoria and held off campus at the beautiful Kwalata Game Ranch north of Pretoria.

Date: 23 - 26 September 2014
Venue: Kwalata Game Ranch - Pretoria

The biennial SASBi and SAGS congresses are the premier national scientific meetings uniting scientists working in the overlapping disciplines of bioinformatics and genetics in South Africa. Participation in SASBi-SAGS-2014 will provide an exciting opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research in both disciplines, and to network with members of the two societies and with leading international scientists who we have invited as plenary speakers.

Our theme is “Beyond Genes and Genomes” with an emphasis on the integration of diverse biological data to understand the function and evolution of biological systems from single gene to whole-genome levels. We are at the door of a promising future for bioinformatics and genomics research in South Africa. Both fields are accelerating and gaining momentum due to the flood of biological data being produced. Exciting breakthroughs are awaiting us at the level of genes and genomes and beyond.

We are compiling a comprehensive scientific programme to meet the needs of all participants. Leading national and international scientists will share their research topics and present the latest and most significant developments in the field. Furthermore, the congress is an ideal platform for postgraduate students to present their research, and we will reserve slots for postgraduate project presentations in each session.

An important feature of the 2014 congress will be the intimate and relaxing environment of Kwalata Game Ranch where participants will be able to network and socialize far away from the office, laboratory or lecture halls. Space will be limited and we therefore strongly encourage early registration and payment.

On behalf of the Joint SASBi/SAGS Organizing Committee, we hereby cordially invite you to attend, sponsor or exhibit at this exciting event.

We look forward to welcoming you at Kwalata Game Ranch in September 2014!

Ozlem Tastan Bishop and Zander Myburg, 2014 Joint Congress Chairs
