Dr Josef Van Wyngaard

My agricultural roots are in my childhood. I helped my father with animal and irrigation management on his smallholding in Randfontein, Gauteng. At that stage I realised that I wanted to make a career in agriculture. I started my own registered Ile de France sheep stud (Wyn-de-Sef) in 2006. Farming with my own sheep was the foundation of my agricultural ambition. In 2010, I finished my BSc (Agric): Animal and Pasture Science degree at the University of the Free State. I enrolled for a master’s degree at the University of Pretoria in 2011. During this time I got married and was sent to the Outeniqua Research Farm in George to carry out my master’s research project, entitled: Effect of palm kernel expeller supplementation on production performance of Jersey cows grazing kikuyu-ryegrass pasture. During my master’s project I took on an additional project to help emerging farmers develop a sustainable beef calf rearing system on planted pasture. I completed my degree in 2014, where after I attended several international climate change workshops which provided me with a focus for my PhD, entitled: Quantification and mitigation of enteric methane emissions from grazing Jersey cows. I graduated in September 2018. Currently, I work for Voermol Feeds as Technical Manager stationed in Bloemfontein. I am a member of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions since 2013, the South African Society for Animal Science since 2011 and the Grassland Society of Southern Africa since 2015.

I feel strongly that everyone should try and better society by using their strengths and aptitudes. Our environment is under constant attack by its inhabitants and it is our responsibility to try and make a difference.

My research

My current research is focused on the improvement of milk solids of dairy cows on high quality planted-pasture; alternative to anionic salts to overcoming bladder stones in small livestock; the effect of individual amino acids fed to extensive beef cattle and sheep; alternative protein sources for animal feeds.
