Currently the Congress is held in mid-July (although in the past it was held in January) and the programme lasts for at least three full days.

Prospective delegates are encouraged to organise workshops, special symposia and courses according to their areas of expertise, especially to address pertinent research questions. The tours aim to capture important and unique aspects of the area in which the Congress is held, especially in terms of rangeland ecology and pasture management.

During the Gala Dinner, awards are presented for the Best Presentation, the Best Presentation by a Young Scientist, the Best Paper published in the African Journal of Range and Forage Science and the Best Poster. The Peter Edwards Award, which is given to the Best Conservation Farmer in the province in which the Congress is held, is awarded during the Gala Dinner. Both the winner and the finalists are acknowledged. When applicable, Meritorious, Prestige and Honorary Membership awards may also be awarded at this time. A special Congress award, named the Faux Pas Award, is given to the Congress delegate who most deserves this prized trophy!
