The 2nd African Water Symposium on PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
Date: 11 – 12 June 2014
Venue: University of the Free State, Bloemfontein
In the spirit of African cooperation and in an effort to affirm South Africa’s integral role in Africa, we aim to bring together significant role-players to discuss mainly:
1. “Ownership” of the water resource. Stewardship issues
2. Transboundary issues
3. Water-literacy in Africa, at all levels. Demand for tertiary programmes and courses
4. Unconventional gas extraction and water resources
The Orange River Basin is southern Africa’s largest river basin. In the east the basin is
very wet and in the west very dry, with concomitant issues, problems and solutions. The focus will be mainly on social and economic issues:
1. Water demand – basin issues (Lesotho, South Africa, Namibia,Botswana)
2. Sectoral competition for water, “green” options, disaster management
3. Resilience of ecological and social systems
4. Catchment management. Smart catchments
5. Fracking and water resources
6. Demand for education and training, institutional (state-academic-industry) links.
Who should attend: anyone and everyone interested in the future of water in Africa
and in the Orange River Basin, from academics to consultants, officials and water managers.
In Cooperation with the Strategic Academic Cluster: Water Management in Water-scarce Areas, University of the Free State, South Africa;
