WESSA 2 YEAR GROEN SEBENZA INTERNSHIP – BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATIONIST

The primary function of this exciting position involves many facets, with a primary focus on estuarine conservation in the region. Species management; resource management and ecosystem management is the broader scope of this biodiversity conservation position.

The Groen Sebenza Jobs Fund Partnership Project is a major skills development and job creation pilot programme that is aimed at developing priority skills in the biodiversity sector and to create sustainable job opportunities for unemployed youth. WESSA is one of 38 environmental or biodiversity organisations, from all tiers of government, NGO and private sectors, who have joined Green Matter and SANBI to help implement the Groen Sebenza project. WESSA is currently recruiting for a Biodiversity Professional for a 2 year internship to be based at one of our Partners in Hermanus, Overstrand in the Western Cape.

Key Performance Areas include:
1. Monitoring, research and management of estuaries
2. River health analysis
3. Implementation of the WESSA Blue Flag programme
4. Driving environmental education initiatives
5. Assistance with the management of the local shark population
6. General Reserve Management in Fernkloof Nature Reserve
7. Working closely with the Environmental Department of the local Municipality

Minimum requirements:
• BSc (Marine Biology, Ecology or similar) or National Diploma in Nature Conservation
• A background in estuarine management would be advantageous
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
• Ability to work independently as position is in a remote area
• A genuine commitment to conservation and the environment
• A PDI candidate aged between 18 – 35, as per the contractual requirements of the funder.
