A position is available for a Scientist (Regional Ecologist – Arid Parks) to provide a science-management interface function at national park level through forums and the implementation of biophysical research and monitoring programmes according to adaptive management principles. The primary area of responsibility is the arid parks, namely Kgalagadi, Augrabies Falls, Richtersveld and Mokala National Parks. The incumbent will be responsible for participating in the implementation and coordination of research and monitoring within the park, working in conjunction with other SANParks scientists and park staff; interpreting and communicating research and monitoring findings and their implications for the benefit of park management and other stakeholders; facilitating research by external scientists; facilitating knowledge and data transfer between scientists and managers; compiling and promoting the development and implementation of science-based management plans and approaches.

Key responsibilities include:

• Coordinate and ensure implementation of the variety of monitoring programmes and associated basic data analysis, archiving and curation
• Together with SANParks discipline scientists, interpret research and monitoring findings, evaluate the practical implications thereof and communicate this to the relevant scientific and management stakeholders, while broadening access to information through focused dissemination strategies
• Facilitate the implementation of adaptive management principles in support of the park management plans
• Provide an essential link and communication channel to park management and other stakeholders re new research and monitoring findings
• Keep abreast of current scientific thinking and pursue appropriate academic development and growth to maintain scientific credibility and recognition
• Take responsibility for upkeep and maintenance of research and monitoring infrastructure and equipment in the arid parks
• Work planning and scheduling, budget control, general administration.

REQUIREMENTS:

• At least a post-graduate MSc degree (preferably PhD) in an appropriate conservation-oriented field
• A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant research, monitoring and/or applied science-management experience.
• Sound knowledge of and background in ecosystem research, monitoring and management, including in-depth knowledge of conservation practices and principles with an emphasis on adaptive management approaches
• The ability to integrate knowledge and communicate across the science - management interface
• A demonstrated ability to forge partnerships and work as part of a team with other researchers and conservation managers in support of park management plans and conservation decisions
• Proven excellent written and oral communication skills and ability
• Ability to handle conflict as well as people management skills
• Computer literacy with a high level of competency with MS Office products as well as good knowledge of databases and basic GIS competency (advanced GIS and Cybertracker experience an added advantage)
• Ability and enthusiasm to travel extensively in the region, spending nights away from home and occasionally travel on weekends.
• A valid Code B driver’s license.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary, based on the salary scale of a position with the Paterson D3 job grade, and allowances and benefits as specified in the HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Service of SANParks. The incumbent will be based at Twee Rivieren in the Kgalagadi Trnsfrontier Park.
