African Journal of Range and Forage Science

The leading rangeland and pastoral journal in Africa

The African Journal of Range & Forage Science is the leading rangeland and pastoral journal in Africa. The Journal is dedicated to publishing quality original material that advances rangeland ecology and pasture management. The journal aims to publish research of international importance from any region, but as an African journal, we are particularly interested in research from Africa and relevant to the continent.

The Journal promotes both science and its application and authors are encouraged to explicitly identify the practical implications of their work.

Aim and Scope

The African Journal of Range & Forage Science is the leading rangeland and pastoral journal in Africa, and one of the foremost such journals globally. It is the official journal of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa. Rangelands consist of ecosystems that contain a herbaceous component with or without woody plants, and which support herbivores, including livestock and wildlife; they may include grasslands, savannas, shrublands, woodlands, some deserts, tundra, marshes and meadows. Forage is defined as native or planted herbage and browse that may be consumed by wild or domesticated animals or that can be harvested to feed them. The Journal is dedicated to advancing knowledge about rangeland and pasture ecology and management.

The Journal aims to publish original, high-quality research of international importance, especially research from Africa and research that is relevant to the continent. The Journal promotes both science and its application, and authors are encouraged to identify the practical implications of their work. Relevant peer-reviewed research papers and research notes published in the Journal deal with diverse issues including the ecophysiology and biogeochemistry of rangelands and pastures; soil-animal-plant-environment interactions and including domestic and/or wild herbivores; rangeland and pasture monitoring and assessment; effects of climate change and fire on rangeland biota; rangeland and pasture management; restoration and rehabilitation of rangelands; ecosystem services that support food production, conservation and biodiversity goals; and the identification and development of pasture-based resources. Submissions highlighting transdisciplinary linkages among biophysical and social sciences that support management, policy and societal values are encouraged. The Journal also includes relevant book reviews and invited perspectives that contribute to the development of range and forage science. Letters to the editor that debate issues raised in the Journal are also considered.
