FIELD TECHNICIAN - SAEON KZN
The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF). SAEON is mandated to establish and manage long-term environmental observatories; maintain reliable long-term environmental data sets; promote access to data for research and/or informed decision making; and contribute to capacity building. The mandate is executed through six geographically distributed nodes that are coordinated by the SAEON National Office in Pretoria. SAEON invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of:
SAEON - PHD Funding for long-term research project to quantify key hydrological processes in semi-arid savanna ecosystems
SAEON is currently implementing a long-term research project to quantify key hydrological processes in semi-arid savanna ecosystems, in order to understand and model the impacts of global climate change and land use on these systems. Through partnership with the Water Research Commission, funding is available for a PhD student to work on one component of this project, from 2015 to 2017.
Bursaries for research on bush encroachment: 2015 – 2017
Funding is available for one PhD and three MSc projects, which fit into a bigger research programme on the effects of bush encroachment on the herbaceous layer: mechanisms, feedbacks and thresholds. The project team comprises Susi Vetter and Brad Ripley (Botany Department, Rhodes University) and Sally Archibald (School of Animal, Plant & Environmental Sciences, Wits).

Biowatch South Africa seeks to appoint a Project Manager based in our Durban office. The Project Manager will be responsible for the overall management of the Seed and Knowledge Initiative (SKI) which Biowatch is implementing with communities in KwaZulu-Natal and with partner organisations in southern Africa. SKI is a partnership between Biowatch, the University of Cape Town and the Mupo Foundation. The goal of SKI is to support small-holder farmers in southern Africa, in particular women and the communities in which they reside, to become more seed, food and nutritionally secure through improved seed and food diversity and the application of local knowledge systems.
